Roman military fortifications in the Algerian Western Atlas: The Castellum of Massaad, ancient Dimmidi

Abstract

   The Romans pursued a policy of progressive expansion towards the south of the province of Numidia, homeland of the anti-Roman Getule tribes and their ambitions, which have always been a real threat to their economic and strategic interests. As a result and in anticipation of these revolts by these fierce tribes, the Romanian army set up a defensive line in the southern region on the periphery of the desert (Saharan atlas) from east to west, supported by the road network. The fortress of Messâad "Dimmidi" is a unique model and a material proof of the bitter conflict of the region between the local tribes and the Roman armies. To provide suitable conditions for soldiers and their well-being, and the best protection of the fortress, it has been garner with many defense and leisure equipment, defensive walls and surveillance towers, fortified doors, shops, bedrooms and baths.
