Geographical Expansion and the Sufi Dimension in the Resistance Movement of Ibn Nāṣir ibn Shahrah (1851–1875)
Abstract
Ibn Nāṣir ibn Shahrah is regarded as one of the most prominent leaders of the Algerian resistance in the southeastern region of the country, where his movement achieved remarkable temporal and geographical expansion. His resistance lasted longer than any other popular uprising in nineteenth-century Algeria. Despite its historical significance, however, it has not received the scholarly attention it deserves. The breadth of his military campaigns, the numerous battles in which he participated, and the diversity of the resistance movements he led across southeastern Algeria make it difficult to encompass all aspects of his struggle. Moreover, the wide geographical scope of his activities and the prolonged duration of his resistance endowed his career with exceptional richness and complexity, making him a direct witness to many of the major events that shaped nineteenth-century Algeria. This study therefore seeks to answer the following questions: Who was Ibn Nāṣir ibn Shahrah? How was the Sufi dimension manifested in his resistance movement?
