French Expansion in the Algerian Sahara: The Case of Laghouat
Abstract
The Algerian Sahara constitutes nearly four-fifths of the country’s total territory. It is characterized by distinct natural features and strategic attributes that confer upon Algeria’s geopolitical position—at both the Maghreb and African levels—a particular significance and a distinctive dimension. This exceptional status has historically made the region a target for adventurers and an object of ambition for invading powers across different eras. The most recent of these was French colonialism, which occupied the city of Laghouat on 4 December 1852 following fierce and violent resistance. From this foothold, France was able to extend and consolidate its colonial authority and diverse policies across the entire Sahara for more than a century, systematically targeting the population’s social and cultural structures.
However, the local population consistently demonstrated conscious resistance that reflected the depth of their authenticity and cultural identity, boycotting colonial rule in various aspects of life and confronting it through multiple forms and means. Armed resistance, Bin Nasir Bin Shahra, represented one of the most prominent popular resistance movements in the Algerian Sahara. This article seeks to highlight French interest in the Sahara, as well as the factors and motivations that drove the expansion of its colonial influence into this region of Algeria.
