The Contemporary Arabic Poem between the Poetics of Discourse and Its Pragmatic Effect – A Pragmatic Study of Selected Poems by Amina Hazmoun and Ahmed Abdulghani

Abstract

This study discusses “The Contemporary Arabic Poem Between the Poetic Function and Pragmatic Impact” and focuses on a pragmatic analysis of contemporary Arabic poetry through speech acts and mechanisms of influence. The study examines the poetic experiences of two contemporary poets: Amina Hazmoun (from Algeria) and Ahmed Abdel Ghani (from Egypt). It aims to understand the relationship between poetic structure and the pragmatic dimension in poetic texts, and how these texts impact the audience.

The study draws on pragmatic concepts that go beyond linguistic structure, exploring the social and psychological conditions governing language use in literary discourse. It asserts that contemporary poetic texts do not merely convey individual emotions, but rather interact with the recipient through linguistic and pragmatic tools intended to influence and generate emotional and intellectual effects.

The study reveals a range of speech acts—such as commands, emotional expression, promises, prohibitions, and others—that contribute to shaping emotional impacts. It highlights how the two poets utilize these acts in constructing their texts in a way that creates a communicative horizon between the poet and the reader.
