Pragmatic Translation

Abstract

In this research, I attempt to draw a picture of the relationship of some of the basic pillars of Pragmatic Studies – Speech Acts, Presupposition, and Relevance Theory – to Translation Studies and the boundries of that relation. In doing so, I try to include, in revealing this relationship, some ideas about how to evaluate translation from a pragmatic perspective. This research adopts a view that combines “Pragmatics Of Translation” and “Pragmatics In Translation”. At the beginning, I present a historical overview of the term “Pragmatic Translation” and its relationship to the concept of "Equivalence" and to translation types, and the effect of employing the Linguistic Turn in Translation Studies. After that, I move on to reviewing models of this relationship represented in the translation of Speech Acts, Presupposition, and Relevance Theory and their roles in translation research, with reference to some examples through which these relationships become clear.
