The role of a guidance program based on cognitive-emotive therapy theory in enhancing certain mental processes among young sprint runners
Abstract
This research aims to develop a guidance program based on cognitive-emotive therapy (CET) theory and to identify its effective impact on developing cognitive processes and improving emotional balance among young sprint runners. The research problem stems from the observation of a clear deficiency in attention given to the psychological and mental preparation of these runners compared to the intensive focus on physical and skill aspects. This results in a noticeable increase in anxiety levels, attention deficit, and a weakened ability to control emotions during crucial competitive situations. To achieve the study's objectives, the researcher adopted an experimental approach with a two-group design (control and experimental). The research population and sample consisted of 14 young runners representing the Najaf Al-Ashraf Sports Club. The Emotional Balance Scale and the Cognitive Processes Test were used as the primary instruments. After collecting and statistically processing the data, the results showed statistically significant differences between the pre-test and post-test scores of the experimental group, favoring the post-test. The researcher concluded that the implemented guidance program proved successful in enhancing psychological stability, developing focus, and improving reaction speed. Accordingly, the research recommends the necessity of including psychological guidance programs within the training plans for young people, in order to achieve integration between physical and mental preparation to raise the level of athletic achievement.
