Metaphoric phenomena in the poem "A Tale about a miserable, homeless, and poor person"

Abstract

This research work, put before the reader, intends to examine the literary constituents of the poem "A Story About a Miserable, Displaced and Poor Person" by the poet Yusuf Manzo, paying attention only to one literary device, that is metaphor which is a key element used in interlocution and text that establishes harmony between the reader and the text, based on imaginative power and aesthetic reasons that stress the communicative function of metaphor. This has given birth to series of comparative use of language in interlocution in both pure use of metaphor and mixed metaphor where the poetic personae laments the situation the country and citizens have found themselves. The researchers clearly spoke about metaphor, brief biography of the poet, and an examination of the poem under research where the poem has been presented and comprehensively explained. Descriptive research approach of qualitative research method was applied by the researchers where content analysis technique facilitated in detecting the metaphors employed in the poem. The findings of research have revealed that the poet employs metaphors where dissimilar entities are likened more than where the entities compared are similar. Through the use of metaphor, linguistic acumen, sound diction and aesthetics, the poet tries to lament and make the situation manifest and felt without stress and in an easy way. The researchers also suggest that many poems of Yusuf Manzo should be studied by other researchers as countless of the poet`s poems which are carriers of numerous extractable literary devices have not been analyzed.
