The impacts of new media on social values and norms in Algerian society
Abstract
This article aims to investigate the impacts of new media on social values and norms in Algerian society by analyzing the transformations brought about by digital technology and social media, particularly their effects on individuals’ behavior, patterns of thought, and social relationships. The study relies on a theoretical and bibliographic analysis of sociological and media studies in this field to examine the relationship between new media and value transformations within society. New media has become an influential social and cultural force that goes beyond its traditional role of transmitting information, contributing to the reshaping of values and changes in the social structure, particularly among young people.
The findings of the theoretical and bibliographic review indicate that the use of new media has contributed to enhancing awareness among certain social groups and supporting educational and communicative processes. However, intensive use of social networking sites has also contributed to disruptions in the value system, including the emergence of individualistic and consumer-oriented values and the decline of traditional social bonds, solidarity, and belonging. It has also been associated with weakened family ties, declining social control, and the spread of alien behavioral patterns. These developments highlight the need for educational and cultural responses to reduce the negative impacts of new media.
