Urban dynamics and its impact on agricultural lands

Abstract

For more than three decades, Algerian cities have been living in a stage of social, economic and cultural transformation that they have not experienced before since their inception, where political, social and economic factors contributed an important role in creating the motives for their growth in an unplanned, chaotic and accelerated manner (1), which resulted in rapid planned urban growth. And chaotic, which led to excessive consumption of highly fertile lands, and this phenomenon also developed at a rapid pace, so that agricultural lands, which represent one of the bases of economic growth in the country, are being eroded day by day and buried under tons of cement, especially in the recent period, when more than 250,000 hectares were lost. 2) From agricultural lands in the period 1988-1996, as it turns annually approximately 14000 hectares (3) of fertile lands to non-agricultural lands, and this is for the account of urbanization, industry, equipment and facilities in Algeria.
