The Role of Arab Bourgeoisie in Consolidating State-Centric Political Economy Model in the Arab World
Abstract
By analyzing the functions of the bourgeois class in economic development and democratic transition, this article seeks to appreciate the role of Arab bourgeois class in devoting the state-centric model of political economy in the contemporary Arab state. The article raises the problem of the comparability of Arabic and European bourgeois in carrying out these functions, assuming differences in the circumstances of their rise and the relationship to power. The article concluded that the Arab bourgeoisie could not be relied upon to have a role in promoting economic development and political democracy; because its status in Arab social structure has always been special, and cannot be compared to bourgeois status in western regimes, which has contributed more to the consolidation of the Arab state’s political economy model based on rent and authoritarian.
