Factors leading to Poor performance in Mathematics among Preparatory year students at Saudi Electronic University from the perspective of the students and their instructors.

Abstract

The goal of this study was to identify the major factors leading to poor performance
among students in the Preparatory year at Saudi Electronic University. To achieve the
objective of the study, the researcher designed an instrument detailing all possible
factors for low performance in Mathematics among college students. The instrument
was distributed among 1008 students in the Preparatory year and among 26 teachers
who taught math in that semester.The study indicated among the major factors that lead
to poor performance in mathematics from student perspective relates to the math
curriculum, followed by problems associated with the electronic learning environment
and finally factors associated with math teachers.As for the low performance in
mathematics from the teacher’s perspective, they identified the following factors mainly
factors relating to students, the electronic learning environment, curriculum related
factors and finally factors relating to teachers.The study enumerated a number of
suggestions that would address pertinent issues highlighted in the study
