Abstract

Languages importing science and technology suffer from the multiplicity of terms for a single concept, but what about languages that export science? In this article, we try to trace some terms of lexicographic definition in a sample of Western studies to show some manifestations of terminological multiplicity, while trying to guess the reasons. To show that terminological synonymy is not a deficiency that characterizes some languages rather than others, but it is a general phenomenon, even if the reasons that lead to it are different: the extension of the meaning, adoption of a specific approach, or the lack of familiarity with previous studies are among the factors that have contributed to the phenomenon of terminological synonymy in Western studies
