For a rebuilding of the economic and commercial association between Algeria and the European Union
Abstract
Algeria concluded an association agreement with the European Union on April 22, 2002, as part of a new international redeployment strategy to offset the impacts of a decade of terrorism, rescheduling of its debt with the IMF and the revitalization of its foreign policy.
Through the implementation of this Association Agreement, Algeria wanted to achieve a diversification of the national economy to allow the development of its non-hydrocarbon exports. However, the application of this agreement has shown flaws and limits in terms of balance and low contribution to the effect of Algeria's national development.
These findings motivated Algeria to demand a thorough review of this agreement to guarantee its operability and equiety, and ensure its interests in a logic of sovereign partnership in the service of national development.
